& CLEAN OUR BEACHES''

Project Objective
•The main objective of the project is to held a beach clean-up activities at Cherating Turtles Sanctuary Centre beachside area and release newly born turtles hatchlings to the beach.
•Our aim is to give more information about environmental education and awareness especially about marine eco-system and educate the participants and the community about the extinction of turtles population in the world. No environmental programme , however good, can be completely successful without public support, and support can only be expected from citizens who are aware of environmental problems and who are commited to doing something about them.
•The partipants will include students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Cherating, student from Sekolah Menengah Sri Baging, trainee from Pusat Latihan Khidmat Negara Kem Cahaya Gemilang Cherating, chalets and hotel owners and their staff, local fishermen and Cherating villagers.
•The volunteers not only had a chance to view turtles newly hatches on the beach, but also participate in releasing them back to sea.
•To protect the strategic resting places for the turtle population in Cherating beach.
•To enhance public awareness and commitment through this activities because education and awareness have always been powerful tools to change the mindsets of community members.
•To educate the students that participate in the activities the important of environmental awareness and needs for marine eco-system.
•The initial findings from the study conducted on the fishermen indicate that the fishermen are quite aware that some of the fishing gears used have an adverse effect to turtles and that the collection of eggs without a license is illegal. Based on those study, we also planning to give full information to the fishermen that participate to focused on turtle-fishery interaction to determine the extent of turtle mortalities due to fishing gears and the economic dependence of egg collection as their secondary source of income.
•To work with the hotels and chalet operators in the turtle nesting areas to encourage them to adopt proper mitigation measures on lighting and noise reduction especially during the turtle nesting season. A discussion between the hotels and chalet operators with government agencies will be conducted at the activities to formulate a proper guideline on turtle watching procedures that could be adopted by the local community to protect the nesting beaches and ensure that the turtles return to our home shores.

# COMMUNITY ORGANISER WILL TRY TO GET SPONSORS AND DONATION FROM CORPORATE AGENCIES SUCH AS BASF PETRONAS, WWF MALAYSIA, AND HOTELS NEARBY TO SUPPORT OUR PROGRAMME.
Expected outcome / output
•To develope a community that is aware of and concerned about the total environment especially marine eco-system and its associated problems.
•Raising awareness and promoting ecotourism at marine turtle sites, so that local communities become involved in and benefit from protecting turtles and their nests.
•This program is being undertaken to create the awareness that the turtles that come ashore to nest is a unique opportunity that community of Cherating should be proud of and guard it with pride. Its a heritages that everyone should taking care for our incoming generations.
•To gain more tourist to Cherating that’s offers beautiful beaches and other lots of great places and turtles watch activities and this will rise up overall community economically.
•Through this activities, we hope we can disseminating environmental information and thus promoting and enhancing public awareness, but also in educating the different sections of public about how important our environment to our lifes.
